There are tabs on the side of the GrassGator head. Push one of the tabs towards the head to open it. Set the bottom of the housing aside.
Once the head is open, remove the spool from the spool housing. Unwind any leftover line and remove it from the spool.
Cut the length of line you will be loading into the GrassGator head. The GrassGator Extra Heavy Duty Bump & Feed model 3630 can hold up to 10ft of .105 line or up to 14ft of .095.
Fold the line in half to find the center.
The 3630 spool has 3 concentric rings. If you look between the rings you should see two things: two holes or eyelets on the body of the spool one on top of the other (red arrows) and a U shaped slit on the edge of the middle (2nd) ring (yellow arrow).
The line will go through the holes on the body of the spool and the center loop will be held in place by the U-shaped slit on the center ring but first, you need to determine which way you should install the line.
There are two sets of eyelets and slits to accommodate right and left-hand setups.
If your trimmer has a right-hand threaded shaft, then set up the line as shown in the picture above. Most curved shaft trimmers are RH threaded.
If your trimmer has a left-hand threaded shaft, then set up the line as shown in the picture above. Most straight shaft trimmers are LH threaded.
If you don't know which one you have, try unscrewing the GrassGator head off your trimmer.
If it unscrews to the left (follows the "lefty-loosey" /"righty-tighty" rule) then it's a right-hand threaded shaft.
If it unscrews to the right then it's a left-hand threaded shaft.
Take the line you cut and folded in half in step 1 and insert one end in each of the holes in the body of the spool following the setup and direction determined in the previous step.
Pull the line evenly through the eyelets and snap the resulting center loop in the U-shaped slit on the middle ring.
Look at the bottom of the spool and wind the line around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrows on the spool: for left-hand threaded trimmers, you wind the line clockwise while the right-hand threaded trimmers should be winded counter-clockwise.
Keep each section of the line on its own half of the spool (top or bottom). Leave about 4" of line loose. Use the slits on to bottom ring to secure the line until you are ready to install the bump knob back into the head.
Put the bump knob back in the bottom housing. Insert the loose ends of the line in each one of the metal eyelets. Pull to make it tight.
Snap the bottom cover back in place. Make sure the spring is still in the head and the tabs snapped back in place.
You are now ready to use the GrassGator head.
If the line unwinds completely at the first bump, make sure the spring is installed and secured in place. Double-check the direction of the line. Make sure it was winded in the correct direction for your trimmer. If it wasn't, remove the line and start the process again in the correct direction.
