Curves down about halfway down the shaft. Built with coil spring (flexible) shafts to accommodate the curve. Most of them rotate clockwise and tend to be lighter than the straight shafts. Can't handle heavy
The shaft goes straight all the way down and ends in a gearbox right before the cutting head. Some are built with solid steel rod drive shafts that can handle heavier heads than curved shafts. Most of them rotate counterclockwise.
Plug-in (corded) trimmers or battery-operated. Most of them come with an AutoFeed head instead of a Bump & Feed type. No threaded bump knob, the bottom of the head is held in place by tabs.
