Recommended heads for open field applications
What is an open-field ?
Large lots or acres of land with tall grass, weeds, and light brush. Very few rocks. No sidewalks, fences, chain link, bricks, or any other solid objects around.
Bladed units are the best heads for large lots with tall grass and light brush however, due to the nature of the blades, these units are not recommended to use around rocks, fences or any other solid objects.
Not only blades will wear out faster but they can become quite dangerous against rocks, bricks or concrete. For lots with solid objects scroll down to the Open field - Solid objects or the Trimming sections.
Recommended Heads
For open fields with no solid objects, we recommend our bladed units.
These recommendations are based on the type of job to be performed but the head your trimmer can use will depend on the brand, type, and engine size. Make sure you check the Brands Section to see which of the recommended heads will fit your trimmer.
Remember
- Blades should be used on tall grass, tough weeds, and brush only. Line units work better on short grass.
- Let the tips of the blade do the work. If you jam the whole head against what you are cutting not only the blades will lose effectiveness but you may end up with weeds wrapped around the trimmer.
- To avoid the issue of the head torquing itself down, unscrew it after each use. Make sure there's no grass, dirt, or debris clogging any part of the head and immediately screw back on.
- Use only the blades designed for the specific GrassGator head model. Metal blades (4690) are designed to work ONLY with our brush cutter model 4680. Do not use metal blades on any other GrassGator head.
- DO NOT use bladed units around solid objects.
- DO NOT use vertical or as a saw

To solve this issue you can either use a line unit that can take thick lines or a Multi-Tool head that can switch from blades to trimmer line once you encounter any solid objects or rocky areas.
The recommendations are based on the type of job to be performed but the head your trimmer can use will depend on the brand, type, and engine size.

Smaller lots, front yards with flower beds, sidewalks, or detailing jobs require heads that can adapt to different situations. Trimming around brick walls requires a thinner line to avoid breakage while edging calls for a thicker line to get the job done. The ideal head for trimming around chain link fences has lines that can pivot while larger lots may require a head that can hold more line.
While bladed units are the best heads for large lots with tall grass and light brush, line units are ideal for trimming around fences, brick walls, and other solid objects. GrassGator has the right tool for every job. Most of our Pre-Cut line heads take different line diameters to adapt to all different kinds of jobs and can be customized to fit your needs.
Smaller line diameters are better for cutting around brick and chain link as it bends out of the way easier than thicker line. When you need more impact power, a thicker line will do the trick.

- Line units work better on short grass.
- Do NOT use blades or bladed units for edging.
- Use different diameters of line for different kinds of jobs. Smaller diameters are better for cutting along solid objects while thicker line is better for trimming tall grass.
- Pre-Cut line units use one or more pre-cut pieces of line. There are no spools to bump nor the head will advance more line.

Bladed units are the best heads for large lots with tall grass and heavy brush however, due to the nature of the blades, these units are not recommended to use around rocks, fences or any other solid objects. Not only blades will wear out faster but they can become quite dangerous against rocks, bricks or concrete.

Even though we recommend the GrassGator Brush Cutter model 4680 for brush cutting, that doesn't mean your trimmer will be able to use it. Make sure you check the Brands Section to see which of the heads listed below your trimmer can use.
