To install any GrassGator head you need to remove either the whole original head or the spool, spool cover, and spring depending on which installation method you are following. Which method to follow depends on your trimmer type, brand, and model. If you haven't done so already, go to the Brands section to find which installation method your trimmer requires. Go back to the appropriate installation method and start following those instructions then, once prompted, continue with the instructions below.
Even though we use the GrassGator 3630 on the pictures below, the GrassGator 7800 follows the same instructions and installs the same way.
After finding the correct nut or bolt on the previous step of the curved or straight shaft installation instructions, you need to open the GrassGator head to expose the hex-shaped hole where the fastener is going to go.
To open the head, locate the tabs on either side of the GrassGator and press towards the head to open it. Set the spool and spool cover aside keeping them as one unit. Be careful not to lose the spring. Notice the hex-shaped recessed hole right in the center of the head.
If your trimmer takes a nut, drop it inside the hex-shaped recessed hole.
If your trimmer takes a bolt, insert the bolt inside the hex-shaped recessed hole. The shank of the bolt goes first. The threads of the bolt should be coming out of the round hole on the GrassGator (see picture) and the head of the bolt should be completely inside the hex-shaped hole.
If the shaft is splined, remember to install the spline cover as explained in the Straight Shaft installation instructions.
With the shaft locked and the nut or bolt inside the hex-shaped hole, start turning the GrassGator head until tight. The GrassGator will work as a wrench on the fastener. In some cases, you may have to either hold the fastener down so it stays in the hex-shaped hole while screwing the GrassGator head or start it with your fingers until it has taken enough threads to be inside the hex-shaped hole.
Put the spool, spring, and bump knob back into the top housing of the GrassGator head. Make sure the spring is back in place and that the line is coming out of the metal eyelets. Push until the tabs snap back in place.
If everything is tight and there's no gap between the GrassGator head and the gearbox (or the spacer cup if you are following the straight shaft instructions) then you are done.
